As ever, Fizzle and TDE Promotions have some great gigs coming up in February.

LIGHT RHYTHMS Tuesday 5th February  Artefact, 1424 Pershore Road, Stirchley Doors at 7.30

The Fizzle TDE Promotions partnership is collaborating with another partner theFlatpack Film Festival to run a night of silent films with improvised musical accompaniment.  The first session, Colour Coded at the end of last year was a great success with some intriguing film footage integrated with some inventive musical improvisation.  So the partnership continues, this time with the title Light Rhythms and a theme of abstraction with early silent films from Fernand Léger and Busby Berkeley and musical improvisations from pianist Stella Roberts, saxophonist Bruce Coates and a saxophone electronics duo with Alicia Gardiner Trejo and Jason Singh.  To book go to https://flatpackfestival.org.uk/event/light-rhythms?perf_no=1506.

TIN MEN AND THE TELEPHONE Thursday 7th February Support Act at 6.30 Main Act at 7.45  Eastside Jazz Club

Tin-Men-1_154414faaf6ce775cad6c8d8cb7a97c5The Amsterdam based trio Tin Men and the Telephone bring their interactive show to the jazz club at the Conservatoire.  It is a unique concert in which the audience downloads an app and then participates in the show by, for example, creating melodies or rhythms for the trio to improvise over.  They are great improvisers and the results are always different and intriguing.  In support is a group led by guitarist Steve Saunders.  See https://www.bcu.ac.uk/conservatoire/events-calendar/tin-men-and-the-telephone-070219 and book at https://www.thsh.co.uk/event/tin-men-and-the-telephone.  This is a co-promotion with Jazzlines at Town Hall Symphony Hall and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

FIZZLE at the LAMP TAVERN: MICK BECK/PHILIP MARKS SAX/DRUMS DUO + SARAH JANE SUMMERS  SOLO VIOLIN  Tuesday 12th February 7.30

An evening of improvisation in the wonderful Lamp Tavern pub in the Digbeth area featuring three fine improvisers.  Sarah Jane Summers draws on classical music whereas Mick Beck and Philip Marks are more at the jazz end of the improvised music spectrum.  Pay on the door, just £7, plus £5 concessions.

RIOT ENSEMBLE with EVAN PARKER ALEX HAWKINS and KIT DOWNES’ ENEMY Tuesday 19th February, 8pm Hexagon Theatre at mac, Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham

Five of UK’s finest improvisers join the Riot Ensemble, one of UK’s most ambitious new music ensembles for an evening that combines improvisation, notation and electronics.  There will be a series of new composed works and improvised pieces including new PRSF funded commissions for Kit Downes and Alex Hawkins.  See and book at https://macbirmingham.co.uk/event/riot-ensemble.

The night features two young groups, the first features Shivraj Singh on bass, two saxophonists Xhosa Cole and Harry Weir, pianist Will Markham and drummer  Rob Harper-Charles.  The second group Machete Squad is led by bass player Si Paton and features Olivia Murphy and Robbie Fearon on saxophones, Stella Roberts on piano and Filippo Raddichi on drums. Pay on the door, just £7, plus £5 concessions.
